What are Scentwork Games:

Scentwork Games for dog's are fun games that involves training dogs to use their amazing sense of smell to locate specific scents in different environments. The games are both mentally and physically challenging for your dog and offer a great form of enrichment.

During the workshop we will introduce you to three Scentwork games:

Line Up:

Dogs must indicate from a line-up of hides, this could be, scent pots, scents tubes, bags, boxes or chairs.

Search, Select and Retrieve:

The dog searches an area for a catnip scented Gun Dog Retrieval Dummy. One of the dummies is scented with Catnip, the dog must select the scent article and bring it back to the handler.

Hide and Seek:

The dog searches an area for a Kong scented article, the dog will progress to clear obstacles in the search area including tunnels and elevated areas as well as multiple scent articles.

The aim of the workshop is to:

  • Introduce the dog and handler to the different elements of the sport.
  • Teach your dog to indicate on the scent article.
  • Find the best reward for the dog.

Each dog and handler team will receive a certificate of attendance and the chance to win prizes in our timed trails.

PRIOR LEARNING:

It is ESSENTIAL that your dog has been introduced to a RED KONG at least one week before you start your introduction course. You should allow your dog to eat treats from the RED KONG This will ensure your dog builds an impulse to find the Kong toy.

NOTE: Red Kong’s have a unique scent. Dogs cannot see the colour red.

PRIOR TRAINING:

While dogs don't need a lot of prior training to begin Scentwork, having a foundation in basic obedience, a good reward system, and comfort in different environments will make the training process smoother and more effective.
